Naomi Osaka pulled out of the Australian Open before her third-round match. She was set to play Australian qualifier Maddison Inglis. Her exit ended a run that drew attention for bold fashion and on-court tension. Osaka shared the news on social media. She did not name the injury. She wrote on Instagram that she had to withdraw “to address something my body needs attention for after my last match.” She also spoke about how hard the decision was. “I was so excited to keep going and this run meant the most to me, so having to stop here breaks my heart,” Osaka posted. “But I can’t risk doing any further damage.” The former world No. 1 had arrived at the tournament in dramatic style. Her first-round entrance quickly went viral online. She walked onto the court wearing a wide-brim hat. She also wore a veil. She carried a white parasol. Osaka later said Nike allowed her to help design the look. The outfit sparked buzz across social media and fashion circles. Her second-round match brought a different kind of attention. Osaka faced Romania’s Sorana Cirstea at Margaret Court Arena. The match was tight and emotional. Osaka won 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The ending was tense. The mood stayed cold after the final point. The two players barely shook hands at the net. Cirstea gave a quick glance toward Osaka. She then turned her head away. The moment stood out to fans in the stands and viewers at home. As they walked toward the umpire’s chair, Osaka spoke up. She asked, “What was that for?” Cirstea answered directly. She was upset with Osaka’s behavior during the match. She took issue with Osaka’s reactions after points. Osaka later explained the exchange. “Apparently a lot of ‘C’mons’ that she was angry about,” Osaka said, “but whatever. I think this was her last Australian Open so, OK, sorry she was mad about it.” The moment added friction to an already emotional tournament run. Osaka showed passion on the court. She also showed vulnerability off it. Her withdrawal brought an early end to her campaign. Fans were left disappointed. Many also expressed concern for her health. Osaka leaves Melbourne having made headlines. Some were for her style. Some were for conflict. Her final message focused on her body and recovery. For now, tennis takes a back seat.
