T20 World Cup row: Bangladesh stare at major financial hit; set to lose millions of dollars

Aminul Islam Bulbul has long held a key place in Bangladesh cricket history as the country’s first Test centurion, a milestone he achieved in Bangladesh’s debut Test against India 25 years ago. That achievement remains a proud moment in his career. On Thursday, however, it became clear that another first may now be linked to his tenure, one that carries negative consequences. Bulbul is set to become the first Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president under whom the national team is likely to pull out of an ICC global tournament. The situation has arisen due to the firm position taken by government sports adviser Asif Nazrul, who has linked security concerns with issues of national prestige. If Bangladesh does not participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the country could face major financial losses. The impact would be felt by the BCB, the players, and the tournament’s commercial structure.By taking part in the T20 World Cup, Bangladesh would earn around Bangladeshi Taka 4 crore, or roughly $300,000. A finish among the top 12 teams would raise that amount to over Bangladeshi Taka 5.5 crore, around $450,000.A withdrawal could also result in the BCB losing close to BDT 325 crore, approximately USD 27 million, which it receives annually from the ICC. In addition, broadcast and sponsorship revenues would be affected, with the board’s income for the financial year potentially dropping by nearly 60 percent or more. There could be further consequences, including the possibility of India not touring Bangladesh in August–September. The television rights for that series are considered to be equal to at least 10 bilateral matches involving other teams.Bangladesh is scheduled to hold elections on February 12. Once a new government is formed, Nazrul, who was active during the protests and is linked with Jamaat, may no longer hold influence. However, the fallout from the episode is expected to remain associated with Bulbul’s tenure. In this situation, the players stand to lose the most, as they miss out on the opportunity to compete at a global event. As per a PTI report, Nazrul and Bulbul have assured the players that they will not lose match fees and will be compensated based on the number of games Bangladesh could have played in the tournament. However, for players at the top level, financial compensation alone is not the sole motivation. The chance to compete at the highest stage also holds significant importance.
