Swami Vivekananda's first life-sized statue unveiled in United States

In a landmark moment for India-US cultural ties, a life-size bronze statue of Swami Vivekananda has been unveiled in Seattle’s bustling Westlake Square, becoming the first of its kind hosted by a US city government.The installation of the revered 19th-century spiritual leader’s monument at the heart of downtown Seattle, in a public space visited by nearly 400,000 people daily. The statue was jointly unveiled by Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and India’s Consul General in San Francisco, Prakash Gupta. The ceremony saw participation from a wide array of elected representatives and community members, including the mayors of Kent, Auburn, Tukwila, Normandy Park and Kirkland, along with city council members from Bellevue, Bothell, Dupont and Redmond. Members of the local Indian-American diaspora also turned out in large numbers to witness what officials described as a “historic and first-of-its-kind initiative.”

Seattle’s inclusive spirit and India ties

Mayor Wilson highlighted that the installation reflects Seattle’s “inclusive spirit” and underlines its commitment to cultural diversity and global partnerships. She emphasised the significance of placing Swami Vivekananda’s statue in one of the most vibrant and innovative regions of the US, which is a hub known for its globally connected technology and innovation ecosystem.The spot encompasses landmarks such as the Amazon headquarters, Seattle Convention Centre and the Seattle Centre Monorail.

Gift from ICCR strengthens cultural diplomacy

The statue was gifted by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to the City of Seattle, marking an important milestone in India’s cultural diplomacy outreach. Officials said the gesture recognises Seattle’s multicultural character and aligns with ICCR’s broader efforts to promote people-to-people connections between India and the US.The unveiling coincided with the celebration of ICCR Day, underscoring the organisation’s mission to use art and culture as bridges across continents.

Global legacy of Vivekananda lives on

Swami Vivekananda, who introduced the philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world more than a century ago, continues to influence generations globally. The installation in Seattle adds to the growing number of international commemorations honouring his legacy and philosophy, especially in cities that host vibrant Indian diaspora communities.

Artist behind the statue

The bronze monument was created by renowned Indian sculptor Naresh Kumar Kumawat, whose artistic portfolio includes over 600 installations in more than 80 countries. Kumawat’s works, recognised for capturing India’s cultural depth and spiritual traditions, serve as visual expressions of the nation’s heritage across global landscapes.

Pacific Northwest: A new cultural bridge

The unveiling underscores the Pacific Northwest’s emergence as a promising hub for India-U.S. cultural engagement. Powered by its large Indian-origin population and dynamic technology ecosystem, Seattle is increasingly positioning itself as a gateway for exchanges, collaborations and artistic initiatives that complement the two countries’ strategic partnership across domains such as technology, defence and trade.
