State Bank of India (SBI) has issued a warning for its customers. In a post on microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), the country’s largest bank warned against fraudsters sending fake “bank letter” and “KYC alerts” to SBI customers. Stating that these links push malicious APK files, the bank advised its customers to install apps only from the official app stores – Google Play Store and Apple App Store.“Scammers are sending fake “bank letters” and “KYC alerts” with malicious APK links. One tap can compromise your phone and drain your money. Download apps only from the Play Store or App Store,” the post reads. “Never install suspicious APKs. To report cyber fraud, call 1930,” it added.The post also has an image which states that official looking documents can originate from unofficial sources. It shows a smartphone screen with a message aiming to create panic and urgency among users. The message reads that the bank account will be deactivated as PAN card details are not activated. Another message appears to build customer trust and is presented as coming from a branch manager. It asks users to “Install SBI Bank APK”.

- Never click on APK filed received from unknown sources
How to spot a fake app
Genuinity of an app can be identified using simple tips and tricks like:
- Always look at who published the app. Fake apps often use names similar to real brands.
- Tap the developer name and check their other apps.
- Very few reviews but high rating = suspicious.
- Real apps usually have millions of downloads. Fake apps often have low install numbers
- Poor design, spelling mistakes, or blurry images are other warning signs.
