Robbery in AIIMS Bhopal lift: Woman employee pushed, mangalsutra snatched in seconds

BHOPAL: An incident of chain snatching allegedly occurred in AIIMS Bhopal. A woman employee was targeted inside a lift. Incident came to light on Monday, while it occurred a day earlier. CCTV footage of the crime also surfaced, raising questions about the hospital’s security arrangements.Incident occurred in a lift located behind the blood bank. The victim, Varsha was alone in the lift while on duty when a young man wearing a mask entered. Pretending to make conversation, he asked her about a medical dept.As soon as the lift reached the third floor, the man stepped out, suddenly turned back, and attempted to snatch her mangalsutra. The victim resisted, but the accused pushed her and fled towards the staircase. He managed to escape with the mangalsutra.There was no security guard present in the lift area at the time of the incident. The matter came to light only when a guard arrived during routine rounds and informed senior officials. The woman contacted the Bagsewania and informed them about the incident.Due to the Sunday holiday and Republic Day on January 26, patient footfall in the hospital was low. Preliminary investigation suggested that the accused fled the campus through the IPD gate after the incident. The accused was yet to be identified.There have been incidents of theft on the AIIMS Bhopal campus, but this was reportedly the first incident of chain snatching. The incident sparked concerns over the hospital administration’s security measures.
