‘Momos’, ‘Chinki’ slurs: Northeast dance troupe faces racial abuse, asked to show 'ID' for using washroom at Patna station

PATNA: A distressing episode at Patna railway station has once again brought to light the persistent racism and bias faced by people from India’s Northeastern states. A cultural dance troupe from Arunachal Pradesh was allegedly harassed and barred from using a washroom in the ladies’ waiting area, with the confrontation captured on video and now going viral across social media. The incident took place on April 2 when members of the visiting dance team tried to access the facilities at the station’s waiting room. According to eyewitness accounts, a woman passenger blocked their entry and insisted they show identification. When the performers questioned the unusual demand, the situation quickly turned hostile. The woman reportedly hurled racial slurs at the group, calling them “Momos,” “Chinki,” and “Chinese,” while laughing during the exchange. The video shows the visitors’ visible shock and frustration as they confronted the discriminatory behaviour. One of the women documenting the event highlighted how travellers from the Northeast often feel apprehensive about visiting other parts of the country due to repeated encounters with stereotyping and prejudice. The clip has triggered widespread condemnation online, with netizens from Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and other regions demanding strict action. Many expressed disappointment that no FIR had been filed despite clear video evidence. Several residents of Patna took to social media to apologise, admitting that such incidents tarnish the city’s image and reflect societal prejudices.Railway authorities from the East Central Railway (ECR) responded on Saturday by stating that Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and female staff immediately intervened, isolating the woman involved and de-escalating the situation. In an official statement, the ECR urged passengers to treat fellow travellers with respect and avoid any form of discrimination based on appearance, religion, caste, or region, warning that such behaviour is unacceptable and punishable.
