QS Rankings 2026: IIM Ahmedabad enters top 25 in Business & Management

If there was ever a question about whether Indian institutions are gaining ground globally, the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 offer a clear answer, they are, and at a steady pace. This year, 99 Indian institutions have found a place in the rankings, up from 79 five years ago. Together, they account for 599 entries across 55 subjects, showing both expansion and growing academic depth. What is more telling is the direction of change: 265 entries have improved, while only 80 have slipped. At 44 per cent, India has the highest share of rising entries among major education systems.Published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds on March 25, 2026, the rankings assess more than 21,000 programmes across 1,900 universities worldwide. India has also recorded 120 new entries, making it one of the fastest-growing systems globally, behind only the US, China, and the UK in fresh appearances. There is still a gap at the very top, India does not yet have a top-10 entry in any subject. But the overall trend suggests that the distance is shrinking.

Here is how IIM Ahmedabad has performed

Within this larger story of growth, the performance of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad stands out.IIM Ahmedabad has secured the 21st position globally in Business & Management Studies, placing it among the world’s leading management schools. It is not just a strong ranking, it reflects consistency, reputation, and growing global recognition. The institution’s rise is part of a wider shift. India now has seven institutions in the global top 100 for Business & Management Studies, compared to four last year. This also shows that management education in the country is no longer a domain of a few standout institutions but is becoming a strength for the country as a whole. One of the most notable achievements of the year has been IIM Ahmedabad’s entry in the Marketing subject ranking, where it has also entered at the 21st spot globally. This is a significant entry for the country because it is for the first time any Indian institute has entered the Marketing subject ranking by QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

What this means for Indian education

IIM Ahmedabad’s performance highlights a larger shift in India’s academic landscape. For years, engineering institutions dominated global rankings. That continues to be true, but newer areas, especially business education, are now catching up.The QS rankings are based on factors such as academic reputation, employer reputation, and research output. The improvement in these areas suggests that Indian institutions are not only expanding but also improving in quality and global perception. At the same time, challenges remain. Fields like arts, humanities, and medicine still lag behind global leaders. But there are signs of progress even in these areas, with some institutions slowly climbing the ranks.

A steady climb, not a sudden leap

What makes this year’s rankings important is not a single breakthrough, but a pattern. India is not moving up in isolated pockets, it is improving across subjects and institutions. In that broader movement, IIM Ahmedabad’s rise to the 21st position is both a milestone and a signal. It shows what is possible when consistency meets global ambition. For students looking at Indian institutions today, the message is simple: the gap with the world’s best is still there, but it is no longer as wide as it once was, and it is closing.
