As the war between the United States and Iran edges towards a critical phase, Washington has steadily increased its military footprint across the Middle East. While no US troops are officially stationed inside Iran, tens of thousands are either already deployed across the region or now moving closer as part of a broader build-up ordered by President Donald Trump.The Pentagon’s mobilisation comes alongside stalled ceasefire efforts and rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy route. With both sides hardening positions, the scale of US troop deployment offers a clear indication of how seriously Washington is preparing for a potential escalation.Around 50,000 troops already in the regionUS Central Command has confirmed that roughly 50,000 American troops are already stationed across the Middle East, forming the backbone of current operations against Iran and its allies. These forces are spread across bases in Gulf countries and nearby strategic locations, supporting air strikes, missile defence and naval operations.This number reflects pre-existing deployments before the latest reinforcements were announced. In recent days, thousands more troops have either been placed on standby or are actively moving towards the region.Key deployments include: 82nd Airborne Division

Officials have indicated that not all elements of these units may deploy at once, but even partial movement significantly boosts US combat readiness.Reinforcements amid widening conflictThe latest troop movements come as the conflict intensifies across multiple fronts. Iran has continued missile strikes on Israel and Gulf targets, while also tightening control over the Strait of Hormuz — reportedly restricting or charging vessels for safe passage.At the same time, US and Israeli strikes have targeted key Iranian military infrastructure, including senior commanders such as Revolutionary Guard naval chief Alireza Tangsiri. Despite these losses, Tehran has shown no sign of backing down.President Donald Trump has maintained a hard line, warning Iran to “get serious soon” about negotiations while insisting that Washington is not the side seeking a deal. He has also threatened further strikes, including on Iran’s power infrastructure, if shipping routes are not fully reopened.The US is also considering what officials call a potential “final blow” against Iran, with options ranging from extensive air strikes to high-risk ground operations, according to Axios. Officials believe a decisive show of force could either compel Iran to negotiate or “simply give Trump something to point to and declare victory”, the report said.
