His rugged look, paired with a more understated grooming style, marked a noticeable departure from his polished red carpet appearances. The role sees Pedro lean into a darker, more introspective character, with the period styling adding to the intensity of the transformation.

This project marks Pascal’s first collaboration with director Todd Haynes. In the film, Pedro Pascal plays a hard-boiled detective opposite Danny Ramirez as his younger lover. The story, which echoes classic noirs like ‘Chinatown,’ charts the passionate and unexpected love affair between a cop (Pascal) and a boarding school teacher (Ramirez) in 1930s Los Angeles, when the city is overtaken by corruption and the world is on the brink of war. The two men become targets of the city’s corrupt political machine and are forced to flee to Mexico.According to Variety, Joaquin Phoenix was originally cast to play the role that Pedro is now doing, but dropped out. Pedro stepping in helped revive the project, which is a gay love story.

As for Pedro, earlier this week, while ‘The Last of Us’ star was filming, he was visited on set by Rafael Olarra, with whom he’s been spending time lately.
