'Muslim-sounding' radio message from missing F-15 airman sparked Iran trap fears, nearly jeopardised rescue

US President Donald Trump revealed that a brief radio message from downed F-15 airman initially triggered alarm in Washington, with officials fearing it could be an Iranian ploy to lure American forces into a trap.“What he said on the radio sounded like something a Muslim would say,” Trump told Axios on Sunday.“He said: ‘Power be to God’,” Trump added. A US defense official backed Trump’s version but clarified that the exact words used were “God is good.” Defense secretary Pete Hegseth also used the same phrase in a post on X.The US president added that those familiar with the officer said he was deeply religious, so the remark was in line with his character. “It was not completely clear early on, but we stuck with it and verified he was alive and not captured. And those who knew him said he is religious,” Axios quoted a defence official saying. The United States carried out a high-risk rescue mission deep inside Iran to retrieve a stranded F-15 airman after his jet was shot down. Under the cover of darkness, nearly 100 special operations forces were inserted into rugged terrain south of Tehran, scaling a 7,000-foot ridge to reach the injured weapons specialist, who had been hiding in a crevice with a sprained ankle. The airman, trained in survival and evasion techniques, managed to establish contact and authenticate himself, while the CIA simultaneously ran a deception campaign to mislead Iranian forces about his location.Trump described the mission as one the most “daring” rescue operations in US history.
