KKR vs PBKS: Will rain play spoilsport at Kolkata? IMD issues warning

Kolkata Knight Riders’ search for their first win of IPL 2026 could face a major hurdle, with rain likely to play spoilsport in their clash against Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens on Monday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a strong possibility of rain impacting the fixture, raising concerns over a shortened contest or even a complete washout.Weather Adds to KKR’s Early-Season WoesKKR, yet to open their account this season, are already under pressure, and adverse weather conditions could further complicate their campaign. Their upcoming match against Lucknow Super Giants at the same venue is also under a rain threat, making it a challenging phase for the franchise.Interestingly, the corresponding fixture between KKR and PBKS last season was also disrupted by rain. Punjab Kings had posted 201/4 before KKR reached 7/0, with both teams eventually sharing a point after the match was abandoned.IMD Forecast Signals Stormy ConditionsThe IMD has attributed the unstable weather to a low-pressure trough stretching from Bihar to Manipur, passing through North Bengal, Assam, and Bangladesh. “The state is likely to witness another round of Kalbaishakhi storms, with the possibility of hail and thunderstorms from Sunday through Thursday. The intensity and spread of rainfall are expected to peak on Tuesday and Wednesday,” the IMD said. “The weather is expected to turn more severe on Tuesday, when Kalbaishakhi storms accompanied by winds of 50-60 kmph, lightning and rain are likely to impact Kolkata and adjoining areas.” Persistent cloud cover and heavy showers have already affected preparations, with both teams’ practice sessions on the eve of the match cancelled due to a downpour. The Eden Gardens outfield remained under covers, with visible water patches.Limited Window for a ResultWith rain threatening to disrupt proceedings, the match officials will have a narrow window to ensure a result. A minimum five-overs-a-side game can only be staged if play begins by 10:56 pm, with the toss required to take place no later than 10:46 pm. Such a shortened contest would likely turn into a high-intensity shootout, heavily favouring aggressive batting. However, if no play is possible within the stipulated timeframe, the match will be abandoned, with both teams sharing a point. While Punjab Kings will look to continue their strong start, Kolkata Knight Riders will be desperate to register their first win. But with the weather forecast looming large, the outcome may ultimately depend on conditions beyond either team’s control.
