Johnny Depp’s quiet act of friendship: How he gave Eric Dance a home and eased his ALS burden before passing

Johnny Depp stepped up profoundly for his friend Eric Dane during the final months of Eric Dane’s brave fight against ALS. The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star quietly offered Eric Dane one of his Los Angeles homes to live in, essentially rent-free, easing a heavy burden as the disease progressed. This heartfelt gesture came to light just after Eric Dane’s passing on February 19, highlighting true friendship in Hollywood.

A generous lifeline in tough times

Johnny Depp’s Private Support for Eric Dane as ALS Battle Worsened REVEALED

Eric Dane, best known as Dr. Mark Sloan on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, faced mounting challenges after his April 2025 ALS diagnosis. The progressive condition had already robbed him of the use of his right arm, then spread to his left side, bringing financial strains alongside physical ones. According to E! News online, Johnny Depp provided Eric access to a Hollywood Hills property above the Sunset Strip under a flexible “pay-what-you-can” deal. Further, Page Six shared that Johnny Depp said, “Eric has one less thing to worry about,” capturing the relief this brought. Johnny wanted to “do what he could to ease the financial burden” as Eric Dane struggled with ALS. This support meant Eric Dane could focus on his health, family, and advocacy without added housing stress. Meanwhile, Patrick Dempsey, Eric Dane’s former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ co-star, described the harsh reality in a February 20 interview on Virgin Radio UK. “He was really starting to lose his ability to speak, he was bedridden, and it was very hard for him to swallow. The quality of his life was deteriorating so rapidly,” Patrick Dempsey shared, underscoring how timely Johnny Depp’s help proved. Eric Dane’s courage and Johnny Depp’s friendship leave a lasting mark, and this friendship is a testament to the power of keeping a promise.

Advocacy and unwavering spirit

Eric Dane turned pain into purpose, joining the Target ALS board to fund research and push for legislation. He even took a guest role as a firefighter with ALS on ‘Brilliant Minds’ in late 2025, and wrapped ‘Euphoria’ Season 3. Throughout, Eric Dane stayed close to ex-wife Rebecca Gayheart and daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, who offered steadfast support after their 2017 separation.
