JEE Main 2026 result: How to calculate your rank from raw marks
How to calculate percentile from raw scores

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the Joint Entrance exam result 2026 on the official website, jeemain.nta.ac.in. Candidates can visit the official website to check their scores. The JEE Main 2026, Session 1 followed the usual pattern by being conducted in several sessions and centres in India and few international cities of choice. Paper 2A(B.Arch.) and Paper 2B(B.Planning) will probably be conducted independently of Paper 1(B.E./B.Tech.), which is spread over several days because of the massive number of candidates. It is important to mention that there is a distinction between scores and percentile by the candidates.

Understanding percentile: The backbone of JEE Main ranking

The percentile system is considered to be one of the most misinterpreted in JEE Main. The percentile is confused with percent. The two are not the same.Whereas percentage is a measurement of the marks divided by the total marks, percentile is a comparative result of a candidate against all other test takers.Step 1: Raw scoresAfter the examination, candidates receive raw scores in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. These are the actual marks secured based on correct responses and negative marking.Step 2: Total raw scoreThe marks obtained in each subject are summed up to obtain the total raw score. This creates the foundation of further assessment.Step 3: Normalisation processSince JEE Main is in several shifts where different question papers are used, there will be differences in the level of difficulty. As a way of ensuring equity, the NTA uses a normalisation process. This statistical correction will make sure that no candidate will be disadvantaged on the basis of a more difficult shift.Step 4: Percentile calculationThe percentile is calculated using the formula:Percentile = (Number of candidates who scored equal to or less than you / Total number of candidates) × 100This means if your percentile is 99, you have performed better than 99% of the candidates who appeared in your session.

Why percentile matters in 2026

For JEE Main 2026, percentile scores will determine:

  • All India Rank (AIR)
  • Eligibility for JEE Advanced
  • Admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs

The merit list is prepared on the basis of percentile scores, not raw marks. Even a difference of a few decimal points can significantly impact ranking at the top.

Percentile vs percentage: A critical distinction

A student with a mark of 180 out of 300 can take a score of 60 percent as an indicator of an average score. The percentile can however be significantly higher or lower, depending on the level of difficulty and the general level of performance of the candidates in that shift. In competitive examinations like JEE Main, relative performance defines success. The larger pictureIn India there are over a million applicants every year to competitive seats in the leading engineering schools. The test is administered in various languages and through hundreds of centres, which further increases its national dimensions as well as the complexity of administration. To the applicants of JEE Main 2026, the message is simple; concentrate on clear concepts, practise in timed situations and master the system of evaluation. Strategy is equivalent to scholarship in an industry where only a small percentage of the competition can make it to the higher percentiles.
