IIT Hyderabad opens fully funded PhD window for global talent under FIRST Fellowship

One of India’s fastest-rising technology institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), has opened its doors wider to the world. The institute has launched a fully funded doctoral programme for international students, an effort that feels as much about people and ideas as it is about policy and rankings. Called the FIRST Fellowship, the initiative aims to bring bright minds from across the globe into India’s growing research ecosystem.Founded in 2008, IITH has moved quickly from being a new entrant to a recognised name in higher education. It has consistently featured among the country’s top institutions in the NIRF rankings and has earned a reputation for innovation-driven learning. But beyond the numbers, the institute is trying to build a culture where research is not just pursued, but lived.

What the fellowship means for students

At its core, the FIRST Fellowship is designed to remove financial barriers so that scholars can focus entirely on their research journey.

  • A monthly stipend of ₹60,000
  • Annual research support of ₹1,00,000
  • Full funding for four years
  • No application fee

For many aspiring researchers, especially those coming from abroad, this kind of support can make the difference between an idea remaining on paper and it being explored in a lab.

Who can apply

The programme is selective, and deliberately so. It is open only to foreign nationals—excluding OCI and NRI candidates, and seeks students who have already shown strong academic promise.Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in engineering or technology with at least a CGPA of 8.5 or equivalent, and both their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees should be from universities outside India. Those who have already contributed to research through publications or patents may find themselves at an advantage.

A campus that encourages exploration

What makes the programme stand out is not just the funding, but the range of fields it supports. From Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change to Liberal Arts and Entrepreneurship, the fellowship reflects IITH’s belief that innovation often happens at the intersection of disciplines. It is this mix, of engineering precision and creative thinking—that the institute hopes will attract students who want to work on real-world problems, whether in sustainability, healthcare, or digital technologies.

Built on a strong research foundation

Behind this new initiative lies an institution that has steadily invested in research. With over $160 million in funding, thousands of publications, hundreds of patents, and a growing network of collaborations, IITH has been quietly building a serious research environment.Nearly a third of its students are PhD scholars, a sign that the campus is as much about discovery as it is about instruction.

How to apply

The application process remains straightforward but disciplined:

  • Fill out the official application form
  • Submit academic documents and a reference letter
  • Email the complete application with the specified subject line

The deadline is April 30, 2026 (5:00 PM IST), and the institute has made it clear that timelines will be strictly followed.

More than just a fellowship

At a time when universities around the world are competing to attract the best research talent, IITH’s move feels both timely and purposeful. It is not just offering funding—it is offering a place in a growing academic story.By inviting international scholars, the institute is not only expanding its own horizons but also contributing to a larger vision: one where collaboration across borders drives the next wave of innovation.
