Ian McKellen recalls ‘horror’ after falling off stage during ‘Player Kings’: ‘Very shocking business’

Ian McKellen has spent over sixty years owning the stage. His presence, precision, and confidence have made him a legend, and yet, as it turns out, just one moment backstage can upend all that. During a live show, as McKellen revealed, he lost his footing and tumbled off the stage, landing right in the audience and leaving him rattled, injured, and haunted by what he calls a “feeling of horror!”

Ian McKellen’s sudden fall mid-performance: What happened?

Per People, it happened during a performance of ‘Player Kings’, a stage adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Henry IV plays, in London’s West End, on June 17, 2024. McKellen, who was 85 at the time, was playing Sir John Falstaff, one of Shakespeare’s most iconic characters. In the middle of a fight scene, he moved forward and suddenly slipped over the edge, crashing into an audience member’s lap.The theater turned from excitement to chaos in seconds.“As I fell off the stage into the lap of an unfortunate audience member, I said to the full house, ‘I don’t do this,’” McKellen, 86, told the Los Angeles Times. “Meaning, I’m an actor who’s in control of what he’s doing.”But this time, he just couldn’t stop what was happening.Someone had left a piece of newspaper on stage, and that’s all it took. It sent him off the edge. House lights shot up, staff scrambled, and the show was cancelled on the spot while the theater emptied out. Later, doctors found a fractured wrist and a neck injury. He spent three nights in the hospital and missed the rest of the play’s London run, dropping out of the tour as well on doctors’ orders. At the time, things felt much worse. Lying on the stage, he admits he thought it was the end. “As they laid me out on the stage, I said, ‘I’m dying.’ And I thought I was. I was out of control. Things were happening, and I just… couldn’t stop them. What’s left now is this feeling of horror. I never want to feel that out of control again.” Even talking about it now, he struggles: “I don’t really like to talk about it because it was a very shocking business.”However, work on a film set came a little easier. “I was able to go back to X-Men land and destroy New Jersey, effortlessly,” he added, “I was able to do all the filming. But the stage…,” he trailed off.McKellen made a small return with two charity performances and loved hearing the audience laugh again, but he hasn’t jumped into a full run yet.“I loved being in front of the audience again. I got all my laughs. So I’m OK. But I haven’t been in a play yet,” he said. LAT reported that he may return to the stage in a production in London, where he lives, but McKellen quipped, “We’re still trying to find it.”
