‘I belong to people’: Vijay rejects alliance rumours, says no compromise on secular stand

CHENNAI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay on Wednesday dismissed speculation about his party joining any alliance, stating that there would be no compromise on its core principles of secularism and social justice.Speaking at an Iftar event in Mamallapuram, Vijay said, “From the time we entered politics, many rumours have been spread about us — about this team and that team. But I do not belong to any such team. I belong to the people; this is the people’s team.”

He said that after earlier attempts to target the party failed, new claims about alliances were being circulated. “They started a false campaign claiming that we would join one alliance or another,” he said, adding that the reports might have left supporters confused. TV reports had earlier suggested TVK was in talks with the NDA, with claims of the party being offered 60 to 80 seats and a deputy chief minister’s post as part of a potential arrangement.Reiterating the party’s ideological position, Vijay said, “We will never compromise on our stand of secularism and social justice.” He added that the party remained firm on forming a govt under its own leadership. “As I said at our first conference, in politics we will not compromise for anyone or anything. There is no question of it,” he said.Urging supporters not to believe such claims, Vijay said, “Whatever rumours are spread, please do not believe them.” He expressed confidence in the party’s electoral prospects and extended Ramzan greetings at the event, which was attended by party functionaries and invitees.
