How to keep moisture and damp away from your walls and almirah

Moisture and dampness are one of the biggest enemies of a home. Most houses suffer from the issue also because they underestimate leaking walls when they see it. From peeling paint and moist smells to fungal growth, excess moisture can ruin your home and the items stored inside it. It includes wardrobes (almirahs) as well. Those close to the walls are particularly prone to moisture and damp issues. But this can be prevented. With regular care and proper planning, moisture problems can be managed. Check it out:Why dampness happensSo first thing first. Before fixing the issue, understand what causes it. So dampness enters homes due to bad ventilation, continuous water seepage, water leaks or indoor humidity during monsoons. All this can reach the almirahs which end up trapping moisture because they get little airflow, and are placed close to cold walls. Now let’s jump on solutions:Proper ventilation is most important

Ventilation is the most effective way to control moisture. So make sure that all rooms with wardrobes or almirah have cross-ventilation. There should be windows or exhaust fans. Keep the affected almirah doors open for at least 15–20 minutes every day. Also maintain a small gap of 1–2 inches for air circulation.Go for waterproof walls Another option would be to go for waterproof walls. If possible, take help from professionals and they will suggest some waterproof walls. The moment you see damp patches or bubbling paint, this means that your wall needs waterproofing. It is suggested to use high-quality exterior coatings or elastomeric paints. Control humidity in your house

Try to control humidity in your house because high humidity quickens the process of dampness quietly! Use a dehumidifier in bedrooms where almirahs are kept. There’s a natural alternative too, you can place bowls of rock salt or baking soda inside almirahs; these help absorb excess moisture. Keep replacing these.Moisture-resistant materialsMoisture-resistant materials are another option. Choose materials like plywood with BWP (Boiling Water Proof) grade or marine-grade boards. These work better in humid climates than MDF. Line the back panel of wardrobes with laminated boards or moisture barriers instead of leaving them exposed. Camphor blocks also help.Fix plumbing and seepage problemsFix plumbing and seepage problems immediately! Leaking pipes behind walls or bathrooms are a serious cause of dampness. Regular plumbing inspections are very important. If dampness originates from bathrooms or kitchens, make sure tiles are properly done.Avoid trapping moisture insidePeople often make the mistake of storing damp clothes or towels inside your almirah. Always air-dry them before stacking them inside the almirah. Overcrowding wardrobes also restricts airflow and increases humidity buildup. So avoid this biggest mistake!Regular maintenance matters

It is important to keep a check on walls and wardrobes. A thorough check up is important too every few months. If you see mould spots or musty smell, an inspection is important. Early intervention is important and it is cheaper than repairing the already damaged walls. Periodic sun-drying of the wardrobe is highly suggested. So now you know how important it is to keep moisture and damp away from your walls and almirahs.
