The 90s marked a golden era for Tamil cinema, where a crop of iconic actresses portrayed compelling characters that left a mark. With her elegant performances in blockbuster films like ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Padayappa’, Ramya Krishnan became a household name, while Meena’s journey from child prodigy to a charismatic leading lady captured the imaginations of audiences.

South Indian cinema has churned out some of the greatest stars over the past few decades. The 90s era for Tamil cinema specifically was defined by glamour and glitz on screen, along with powerhouse performances from some of the biggest names in the industry. From Meena to Ramya Krishnan, many actresses have ruled the world of entertainment for years. Here is a look at some of the most beloved Tamil heroines from the 90s.

Ramya Krishnan

Full of grace and a powerful on-screen presence, Ramya Krishnan is one of the most iconic actresses of South Indian cinema. Predominantly, the star has worked in Tamil as well as Telugu cinema, and is well known for having more than 260 acting credits to her name. She started her career in 1983, when she was a mere 13-year-old. Her big break in more recent years came after she starred as one of the lead characters in ‘Baahubali.’ Some of her other well-known works include ‘Padayappa’, ‘Super Deluxe’, ‘Jailer’, ‘Annamayya’, and ‘Allari Mogudu.’

Meena

South Indian actress Meena is also one of the few stars to transition from acting as a child to officially making her debut as a lead in films. Over the course of her career, which started in 1982, she has worked in more than 200 films, many of which star her as the leading lady. Some of her most popular works include ‘Chintu’, ‘Drishyam’, ‘Muthu’, ‘Ejamaan’, ‘Bharathi Kannamma’, ‘Varnapakittu’, and ‘Allari Mogudu.’ Meena is one of the most popular actresses from the 90s, and she still continues to make her mark in the film industry.

Nagma

Nagma debuted in the film industry right at the cusp of the 90s, and quickly rose to fame for her beauty, on-screen acting and her chemistry with all of her fellow co-stars. Known as the glamour queen, Nagma starred in some of the biggest hits in the industry in the 90s and quickly became the most sought-after actress of her time. Some of her most popular works include ‘Kadhalan’, ‘Baashha’, and ‘Love Birds.’ However, she is best known for the popular Tamil song, ‘Mukkabla’, where she starred opposite Prabhudeva, and rose to fame for her ability to match the famed dancer’s presence and pace as a dancer.

Devayani

Devayani is another name from the 90s that was once synonymous with the ‘girl-next-door’ roles. She started her career in the film industry with ‘Thotta Chinungi’, and the rest is history. Known for her innocence and bubbly personality on the big screen, the actress was cast in a lot of big hits, including ‘Kadhal Kottai’, ‘Nee Varuvai Ena’, and ‘Suryavamsam.’ Her rise to fame did not just stop at films, as she also starred in various TV shows and continues to work in the industry. She is best known for being one of the leads on the TV show ‘Kolangal’, one of the longest-running Tamil TV shows.
