NAGPUR: Amid the uproar across Maharashtra over the rape-accused astrologer Ashok Kharat case, a sharp exchange erupted on Sunday between Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar and Maharashtra revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Wadettiwar voiced concerns that Kharat’s life could be at risk in custody, while Bawankule countered that anyone with evidence should present it to investigating agencies instead of airing claims in the media.Referring to the 2024 Badlapur case, in which a rape accused was killed in a police encounter, Wadettiwar alleged that there had been past attempts to protect individuals linked to those in power. He warned that similar efforts could be made in this case by eliminating Kharat to suppress evidence. He also urged the govt to ensure the case does not end like that of disgraced US financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died under suspicious circumstances in jail while facing sex trafficking charges.

Wadettiwar’s remarks came after former minister Deepak Kesarkar claimed that 39 MLAs had visited Kharat. Wadettiwar demanded action against all those allegedly involved, calling for them to be booked under anti-superstition laws. He said that anyone who supported or promoted Kharat, encouraged blind faith, or treated him as a god should face criminal proceedings, and insisted that the full list of names be made public. He also raised concerns about a pen drive reportedly linked to the case, claiming that its contents could expose influential individuals and create serious trouble for the Maharashtra govt. “If all that is on that pen drive is revealed, Maharashtra govt will land in a serious trouble. The big names involved in Kharat’s activities will be exposed. If it all comes out, I believe there will be a political earthquake in Maharashtra,” Wadettiwar said.Responding strongly, Bawankule challenged Wadettiwar to submit any evidence to the authorities rather than making public allegations. He criticized the Opposition for attempting to influence the investigation through media statements, stressing that such a sensitive matter should be handled through proper legal channels.Bawankule defended the police, stating that they are acting appropriately and following due process. He emphasized that merely naming individuals does not establish guilt and that action is taken only when supported by evidence. He added that investigations must proceed methodically, and unverified claims should not be treated as conclusive.
