The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a formal clarification after viral reports suggested that a QR code printed on the Class 12 mathematics board exam held on March 9, 2026 linked to a YouTube video, sparking concerns among students and parents about the authenticity of the papers. The claim, which quickly spread across social media, raised fears of a possible security breach. In its official release, CBSE confirmed that the question papers are genuine and the security of the exam remains intact. The Board further emphasized that QR codes are standard security features, designed to verify the authenticity of exam papers in case of suspected leaks. CBSE assured that measures are being taken to prevent similar confusion in the future.
What happened with the CBSE Class 12 Math question paper
During the March 9 Class 12 mathematics exam, students noticed a QR code printed on the question paper. While QR codes are a standard security feature on CBSE exam papers, intended to provide exam-related information and verify authenticity, their presence is nothing unusual. The situation gained attention when a student reportedly posted a clip after scanning the code, which linked to a YouTube video. This post went viral in no time on social media, and screenshots were shared by many. Many students and parents were surprised and curious about the connection between the two websites and the incident went viral online. The CBSE has now clarified that the exam papers are genuine and the use of QR codes was never a security threat.
CBSE clarifies the issue
According to the official release, QR codes on question papers are security features meant to verify the genuineness of the documents in case of suspected breaches. While in a few paper sets scanning the QR code appeared to link to a video, CBSE confirmed that the integrity of the question papers was never compromised. The Board stated:“It is hereby confirmed by the Board that the question papers are genuine. The security of the question papers remains uncompromised. Necessary steps are being taken to ensure that such issues are not repeated in future.”
Steps taken by the Board
The Board has taken this matter seriously, and processes are being reviewed to ensure that in the future, the QR codes do not result in any such confusion. The Board reiterated its earlier assertion that question papers are safe, genuine, credible, and secure, ahead of upcoming examinations.With this clarification in place, students and parents can be assured that the Class 12 math exam was conducted in a secure manner, and the papers are original. This incident also demonstrates how false information can go viral in no time on the Internet, even in a very controlled atmosphere like an exam.
