Bike with 41 unpaid challans seized in Gurgaon, owner fined s 5 lakh

Gurgaon: A motorcycle with 41 pending traffic challans amounting to around Rs 5 lakh was impounded by the traffic police on Thursday near Dundahera Border during a special enforcement drive for non-payment of fines pending for over 90 days. The vehicle bearing license plates of Haryana (HR13J6809) belongs to Sandeep, while it was being driven by a man naned Sumit of Jind. The violations primarily included driving without a licence, absence of a valid insurance, pollution under control (PUC) certificate, no high-security registration plate (HSRP) and driving without a helmet. As all 41 challans crossed the 90-day limit and the outstanding fine remained unpaid, the vehicle was impounded under Section 167(8) of the MV Act.

The drive was conducted under the direction of Rajesh Moham, DCP (traffic) and the motorcycle was stopped during checking by zonal officer ASI Ashok and his team. “Drivers are informed about the number of challans outstanding against their vehicles during checking and are urged to clear dues immediately. Vehicles found with excessive pending challans will continue to face strict action, including detention and impounding, if fines remain unpaid,” Vikas Verma, traffic police spokesperson, said. As part of a month-long special enforcement drive, cops challaned 2,896 motorists for wrong-lane driving and improper lane changes in January, imposing fines totalling Rs 26.1 lakh. They said regular campaigns and workshops are being conducted to educate truck and transport union members, commercial vehicle drivers, bus and school bus drivers, company drivers, and auto-rickshaw operators about the importance of lane discipline and adherence to traffic rules.Officials said lane markings are designed to segregate traffic, with heavy vehicles using the left lane, light vehicles in the middle, and the right lane reserved for overtaking.
