Filmmaker Anurag Basu has shared a rare detail about Arijit Singh’s upcoming career move, days after the singer announced that he is stepping away from playback singing. The update comes amid widespread reactions to Arijit’s surprise decision, which left fans and the industry in shock.

“I was not surprised at all,” says Basu

In an interview with BBC Hindi, Anurag Basu said he was not taken aback by Arijit’s announcement. “The world was in shock after learning about Arijit Singh’s decision, but I was not at all surprised or shocked. I have known him for a long time and feel he is very talented and wishes to do more apart from singing,” the filmmaker said.

Arijit once wanted to assist on Barfi

Basu also revealed Arijit’s lesser-known interest in filmmaking. “He asked me to make him an assistant in Barfi. He has an in-depth knowledge about filmmaking,” he shared, highlighting the singer’s creative curiosity beyond music.Adding another layer to Arijit’s future plans, Basu revealed that the singer dreams of giving back. He told the outlet that Arijit wants to open a school for children and spend time with them.

“I am calling it off,” Arijit announces

Earlier on Tuesday, Arijit announced his decision to step away from playback singing in a heartfelt Instagram note. Thanking listeners for their continued support, he wrote, “I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on,” adding, “I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”Addressing speculation, Arijit later clarified his decision on his private X account. “There is not one reason behind this, there are several reasons,” he wrote.

Creative boredom and a return to roots

Arijit also cited creative restlessness as a factor behind his move. “I get bored pretty quick… I need to do some other music to live,” he said, adding that he is excited to hear new voices emerge.Reassuring fans, he made it clear that he is not quitting music altogether. “I am going to go back to Indian classical music. I wanna go back to making music,” Arijit shared, while confirming that he will complete his pending commitments.
