Mikaela Shiffrin, Ilia Malinin, Madison Chock, Evan Bates, and Team USA face pressure, pride, and personal battles

For Mikaela Shiffrin, the 2026 Olympics are personal. In 2022, she entered Beijing as a top favorite but left without a medal after multiple did-not-finish races. The reaction was hard to take. “A lot of people who were tuning into Mikaela Shiffrin for her biggest race were tuning in when I didn’t win a medal,” Shiffrin told Us Weekly. “They were saying, ‘Don’t even come home. You failed us. You didn’t bring home any gold.’”Now 30, Shiffrin says her mindset has changed. “We could go to these Games and we could do everything right, and it could still go wrong,” she said. Her focus is simple again. “Could we boil it down a little bit and remember that we’re just ski racing here?”In figure skating, Ilia Malinin knows the eyes will be on him. At 21, he is already one of the biggest names in the sport. “Feeling that pressure is kind of like, ‘OK, everyone’s looking at me. Now I really need to be at my best,’” Malinin told Us Weekly. Still, he admits not every day is perfect. “I’m not perfect. I’ll have bad days, I’ll have good days.”Madison Chock and Evan Bates are also back for their fourth Olympics together. Chock says representing the country still means everything. “It’s one of the greatest honors to be able to go to the Olympics and represent the U.S.,” she said.Off the ice, familiar faces will return too. Lindsey Vonn is back after earning her spot in December 2025, years after stepping away from the sport. NHL players will also return to Olympic play for the first time since 2014, adding even more buzz. As Team USA settles into Italy, the goal is clear. Win medals if possible. But more than that, show up ready, proud, and human.
