Guwahati: Two persons — one each from Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh — were arrested on Thursday for allegedly attempting to rob a lower-court magistrate in Nalbari district on Wednesday night, police said. Three-four members of the gang are currently on the run.The accused are Ritesh Kumar of Jharkhand and Mahesh Kumar of Uttar Pradesh.Nalbari SSP Bibekananda Das said, “It was a gang of five to six persons, which attempted to rob the judicial magistrate first class Nitish Kumar Sarma of Nalbari district and sessions judges’ court. All of them are from other states. Their target might have been to take the magistrate’s vehicle.”The SSP added that the arrested persons have similar cases against them in Jharkhand. “It was a big gang and they came here with the objective of robbery. They operate across the country.”The incident took place near Ghograpar police station in Nalbari district around 7.30pm on Wednesday. However, the robbery attempt was foiled as locals reached the spot, forcing the robbers to flee.The driver of the magistrate said, “We were travelling towards Ghograpar. The robbers intercepted our vehicle by overtaking it on the national highway. After we stopped our vehicle, three masked men came out of the vehicle and were coming towards us. By that time, locals came forward and intervened to help us.”
