In a discovery that mirrors the cinematic history of its location, archaeologists have unearthed a hidden tomb containing the remains of 12 people and a mysterious ceramic chalice beneath the Treasury at Petra. The archaeologist Pearce Paul Creasman, of the American Centre of Research, revealed a chamber filled with complete skeletal remains and grave goods that had been sealed for two millennia. Unlike most areas of the ancient city, which were disturbed by looters or natural forces over the centuries, this vault was found in an exceptionally rare, untouched state. The discovery of these skeletons provides a transformative look at Nabataean burial customs, as the remains offer a unique, uncorrupted biological record.

Researchers made the discovery using ground-penetrating radar. As noted in a report on National Public Radio (NPR), for years, people speculated that more chambers might exist beneath the Treasury, which followed the finding of two tombs on the left side of the monument in 2003. To investigate, researchers turned to radar to check if there was symmetry on the right side as well. The radar picked up physical features similar to those of known tombs. With this evidence in hand, the Jordanian government approved an excavation.
The story of the Petra jug
The excavation team couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw a ceramic jug held in the hands of one of the skeletons. As noted by Warner Bros. Discovery in a report, the Treasury had been the set for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’s climax, so finding a chalice in this secret tomb was like watching ‘art imitate life.’ Even though the vessel held great archaeological value, researchers pointed out how ironic it was to find a cup resembling the cinematic ‘Holy Grail’ right where they shot that famous scene.
Rare glimpse into the lives of the desert architects
Dr Creasman called the discovery a ‘time capsule’ because they found the skeletons with their personal items still intact. This gives us a special chance to learn about the Nabataeans, who carved Petra into the sandstone but left few written records. The remains include men, women, and children. Experts will test DNA and analyse organic sediments from the tomb, hoping to discover more about how these ancient people lived, what they ate, and where they came from.

Professor Richard Bates of the University of St Andrews told NPR that by analysing the skeletal material – including teeth and bones – researchers can now reconstruct the lifestyles, diets, and health of the Nabataean people. This level of preservation is expected to unlock a view of their society that has previously been inaccessible to scientists.
