The Indian men’s senior selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, is likely to pick squads for the one-off Test against Afghanistan and the three ODIs that follow on May 19. As TimesofIndia.com reported on May 11, a message has already been sent to the hopefuls, asking them to gradually increase their workload for the five-day fixture scheduled right after the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).Shubman Gill is expected to lead a strong batting unit for the fixture and a decision on the bowling group is expected closer to the selection day. With Jasprit Bumrah likely to be rested for the contest that doesn’t form part of the World Test Championship, plenty of fresh faces are expected to make the cut. It includes Gurnoor Brar, who has impressed the selectors with his ability to consistently hit the good areas, at pace and with sharp movement.Regarding the ODI selection, no major surprises are expected, but a significant decision could be made concerning the second wicketkeeper option.Rishabh Pant has been part of the set-up but has fallen out-of-favour due to his inconsistent returns with the bat in the IPL. With Ishan Kishan’s stocks on a bull run since his return to the T20Is, it will not be a surprise if he gets a look in. His name was discussed in previous meetings, too, owing to his red-hot form; being a left-hander and ability to give the head coach the flexibility to bat anywhere in the order.KL Rahul is in form, continues to enjoy the management’s backing, and will remain the side’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in the foreseeable future. The ODI World Cup next year is in South Africa and Rahul’s experience will be invaluable. The next big discussion is set to be around Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and the spin-bowling all-rounder role.Jadeja has had underwhelming returns with both bat and ball in the format, and his batting approach could push him towards the exit door as he bats at a position where the management expects more intent. Yet, will it be Jadeja or Axar Patel? Or someone else? It’s anybody’s guess at the moment, but a discussion is set to happen regarding this slot.It is further learnt that informal discussions have already begun with regard to the World Test Championship, the new T20I cycle and the 50-over World Cup next year. With crucial calls expected to be taken, it remains to be seen if the announcements happen the same day as the selectors meet or if there is a delay.
