'Please speed up my returns': Rahul Gandhi's response to his 'BJP-supporter' financer wins internet

NEW DELHI: A light-hearted exchange between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and a mutual fund distributor who described himself as a long-time BJP supporter has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread reactions from users across the political spectrum. The interaction began after X user Muthukrishnan Dhandapani claimed in a detailed post that Gandhi had been his client for mutual fund investments since 2013, when the Congress-led UPA government was in power.Dhandapani, whose X bio identifies him as an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor, said he had consistently supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP publicly between 2014 and 2024, but alleged that Gandhi and his staff never allowed political differences to affect their professional relationship.“Never once Rahul or his office staff brought that subject to me,” he wrote, adding that Gandhi “addresses me with respect and never behaved in any haughty manner.”He also claimed that Gandhi had sought his professional input while selecting a key professional some years ago.“Wanted to post this to show how main stream media and IT cells of parties can make someone look completely inhuman,” Dhandapani wrote.Responding to the post, Gandhi replied humorously: “Muthu ji, your political views are your own – but please do speed up the returns on my investments. 😃”The response quickly gained traction online. Till the filing of the report, Gandhi’s reply had crossed 1.5 million views, with more than 31,000 likes, 5,600 reposts and over 1,000 comments.Dhandapani later replied, “Pleasantly surprised with your response.”Several users praised the exchange for its civility and humour.“One user wrote, “I dont vote for your party, but this tweet made me laugh.”Another commented, “Professionalism transcend politics. People are usually more nuanced than what we see on the screen.”Some users, however, questioned whether publicly revealing a client relationship was professionally appropriate.“This kind of conversation is very rare in New India’s political circles, but I still believe sharing the client’s name in the first place was not professional,” one user wrote.Others continued the humour, with one quipping: “Even Rahul depends on Modi supporters for his ‘hard earned’ investments!”
