US town mayor fires entire police department for upsetting his wife, says he won't block paychecks

A mayor of a small town of Georgia in the US fired the entire police department for upsetting his wife.

A mayor of a small Georgia town has fired the entire police department for apparently upsetting his wife after the cops wrote some offensive comments on social media about the wife who used to work for the city’s council. Mayor Ron Shinnick, however, says he was just reshuffling like changing the coach of a team.“It’s a guy thing. You know, occasionally, college football programs, you have to change the coach, and some people like it, some don’t. And that’s just kind of the way it happens sometimes, you know?” the mayor said.Cohutta is a small town in Georgia with a very small population of around 1000.WDEF reported that the officers with the police department had a problem with Pam Shinnick, the mayor’s wife, as she was continuing to work for the city council even after she was terminated because of the toxicity she created.After those allegations surfaced, mayor Ron Shinnick and town attorney Brian Rayburn held a press conference where all sides agreed to a resolution through open dialog and good-faith mediation. While the resolution is now known, a notice was posted on the Cohutta Police Department’s door Wednesday reading: “The PD has been dissolved, and all personnel have been terminated.”The deputies were expected to assume the law enforcement services for the city.“They’ll get a paycheck. We’re not that way, and I appreciate their service, okay? It is time for a change,” mayor Shinnick said after firing the entire police department.Former officers said they will not relinquish any department equipment until proper procedures are followed.“We have to return all equipment, and as of right now, there is no one here that is a legal town employee to sign off that they’re receiving this equipment. It is a felony if a gun or something like that comes up missing. We will not turn that over to anyone. It will remain in our possession until such time someone can be present to take it,” one said.
