Tamil Nadu government formation: TVK chief Vijay's second bid falls flat again - what governor said

NEW DELHI: TVK chief Vijay’s second meeting with the Tamil Nadu governor on Thursday turned dissapointing again after the governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar said that the “majority required to form the government has not been established.”TVK has been struggling to form government in the state even after securing a stunning victory, after it fell short of majority by just 10 seats.

Though the Congress has offered support to the actor-turned politician’s party, it still requires at least 5 more seats to form majority government with 118 MLAs in the assembly.“Thiru Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu, has invited Thiru C Joseph Vijay, President, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, today (7.5.2026) to Lok Bhavan, Chennai,” the statement said from the governor’s office.“During the meeting, the Hon’ble Governor explained that the requisite majority support in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, essential for forming the Government, has not been established,” it added.Vijay had earlier accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah of “interfering in Tamil Nadu politics and creating confusion”.“Now, the BJP, or Amit Shah and Modi, are interfering in Tamil Nadu politics and creating confusion. TVK has been chosen as the single largest party by the people. Therefore, he should be allowed to take office. That is the guidance provided by the Constitution. Even when he has sought support, the Governor is not making any decision on that and is giving room for confusion here. This is not acceptable. Furthermore, the Governor cannot demand a list of people supporting TVK. He cannot say, ‘Who is supporting you? Bring 118 and prove it to me, then come for the swearing-in ceremony’,” said Vijay.TVK delivered a major shock to the state’s ‘Dravidian’ parties, effectively ending the three-decade-long dominance of the DMK-AIADMK duopoly. Since Vijay is also expected to vacate one of the two assembly seats he secured, TVK’s effective strength in the assembly will stand at 107. Together with Congress, the alliance’s tally rises to 112 members, just five short of the majority mark.
