'Jana Nayagan' censor row: Revising committee or Supreme Court? Makers to take final call on Thalapathy Vijay starrer
Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ faces an uncertain release as makers weigh options after a High Court verdict. Following a dispute over its censor certificate, the production house is deciding between approaching the Revising Committee or the Supreme Court. The film’s Pongal release was missed due to these ongoing legal battles.

A pivotal moment in the ‘Jana Nayagan’ legal saga has been reached. The movie is hailed as the last feature film of actor and politician Vijay, which was originally slated for a Pongal release on January 9. Currently, it is barred from release as it is ceding the space for censorship troubles. While the filmgoers are irritated because of the long waiting time, the film industry itself is in the same line. This scenario is where the movie’s production company is pondering what to do next. According to the reports, KVN Productions might make a decision today regarding whether to continue the legal tussle or to move the Revising Committee or the Supreme Court.

Revising Committee or Supreme Court, what’s next?

With the golden Pongal opportunity having gone past for ‘Jana Nayagan’, the team’s plan B is being thought about. The team is exploring different scenarios, according to a report by News 18, with them deciding to possibly withdraw the case altogether and go the Revising Committee route, while also the other option of the Supreme Court comes to mind. The Revising Committee will take at least 10 days or even more. Having thought through all these aspects, KVN Productions will probably today, on January 28, make a crucial decision that will determine the coming destiny of ‘Jana Nayagan’ and the movie’s premiere.

How did the ‘Jana Nayagan’ censor dispute begin?

The Central Board of Film Certification viewing ‘Jana Nayagan’ declined the immediate grant of the U/A certificate and directed that it be sent to the Revising Committee. Dissatisfied with the same, the production house filed a writ petition before Madras High Court. The matter was taken up by a single judge, Justice PT Asha, who set aside the Censor Board’s recommendation that the film be sent to the Revising Committee and immediately directed the issue of a censor certificate to the film. The order was not to the liking of the Censor Board, which preferred an appeal immediately.

‘Jana Nayagan’ High Court verdict alters the course

The matter was placed before the Division Bench, presided over by Chief Justice Srivathsa, and it has reserved its order. By the present ruling, the Bench has set aside the order of Justice PT Asha granting the certificate to the movie immediately. Through this order, the order of the Censor Board has been revoked. It is believed that the single-chamber judge may be given the opportunity to rehear the matter, which will, in tactical maneuvers, set aside the issuance of the release once again.Disclaimer: This report is a journalistic account of a recent court development.
