Mallhar Thakar opens up on intense role in ‘Dharpakad’: 'Concept of digital arrest seemed very new and relevant' - Exclusive

Mallhar Thakar, known for entertaining audiences with his comic timing and romantic roles, is now stepping into a completely new space with a unique storyline. The actor will next be seen in the upcoming film ‘Dharpakad’- India’s first Gujarati feature film based on the ‘Digital Arrest’ scam. The film also stars Shruhad Goswami alongside him. To know more about the film and get deeper insights, ETimes spoke exclusively with the actor, where he opened up about the project and much more.

Mallhar Thakar on collaborating with Shruhad Goswami for the first time

When asked how the collaboration transpired, Thakar replied, “For the first time I am sharing the screen with Shruhad Goswami. He is a very dedicated person, does a very good job, is very cooperative and works with new ideas. The collaboration has been very amazing, very nice. And when you get to work with such genuine actors, you know… we say that it is very nice, very nice, the vibe of the film is maintained. So I am very happy to be associated with Shruhad Goswami. Although, we had met for the shoot before ‘Laalo’ movie came, but since then we have become very good friends now.”

Mallhar Thakar on taking up an intense role in ‘Dharpakad’

Known for his comic timing on-screen, Malhar Thakr opened up on what made him take up an intense role in ‘Dharpakad’, “The topic of digital arrest in it seemed very interesting to me, very new. It was a different kind of character, a different kind of role. So I thought that now I should change the things, in which such things come, such a subject comes which is completely different, relevant, feels like a family film and yet my character gets a value addition. So that’s the thing that attracted me to this project. And secondly, I wanted to do a subject which is completely based on the digital world. And when Anishbhai came with such a subject, I connected more with the original story of the film and the main concept of the film, that’s why I did this film.”

Mallhar Thakar on getting typecast in regional cinema

When asked about being easily typecast in Gujarati cinema and if ‘Dharpakad’ was his way of breaking that mould, Thakar clarified: “Absolutely, in Gujarati, it happens that stereotypes are created. Like ‘Chhello Divas’, I have done many films with that kind of characters, that kind of vibe. So you know, that happens, but how do actors try to break the stereotyping thing, like I did ‘Shubh Yatra’, ‘Saheb’, ‘Jai Mataji – Lets Rock , ‘Dhuandhaar’, ‘Sharato LagU’. I have tried my level best to break the stereotyping thing. Now, many times people like it, many times they don’t like it, but that doesn’t mean an actor should stop doing that. So I feel that if I find a very interesting project, if my role is very interesting, if there is a lot of action, then it is 100% possible that the stereotype can be broken. And it is genuinely difficult for actors. Many actors are very no, they get caught in a zone. And I wonder when I’ll break! So, that’s why it happened to me.”

About the makers

Directed by Anish Shah and the fresh pairing of Mallhar Thakar and Shruhad Goswami has also been raising the expectations high for their ardent lovers. The film also features veteran actors like Prashant Barot, Pratik Rathod, and Jay Bhatt in the pivotal roles.
