3-year-old girl dies after 2 loudspeakers fall on her during Republic Day celebrations in Mumbai

MUMBAI: A three-year-old girl was killed after two loudspeakers installed for Republic Day celebrations in Vikhroli’s Ambedkar Nagar fell on her on Monday. Vikhroli police have registered an FIR in the matter.According to preliminary reports, Angel Rajesh Sonkar was playing on the street near a temple when a clothes scrap dealer accidentally brushed against the wires of the two huge speakers, causing them to topple on the girl. Residents rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries. The incident, which was caught on CCTV camera, triggered outrage among residents and on social media. Locals blamed the event organisers for failing to properly secure the heavy sound equipment in a public area.Police have initiated a probe to determine criminal negligence, including whether necessary permissions were obtained and safety norms followed while installing the speakers, and are examining the CCTV footage and recording the statements of witnesses. The girl’s family has also alleged delay in treatment.
