The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has urged its affiliated schools to speed up the implementation of the third language (R3) in Class VI, warning that several institutions are yet to meet the requirements laid down for the 2026–27 academic session under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. According to the Board, while a large number of schools have already selected and uploaded their third language options on the OASIS portal, some are still behind. In a few cases, schools have even submitted language choices that do not match the policy guidelines.CBSE has taken note of these gaps and has now moved to ensure that all schools fall in line. The Board has made it mandatory for all schools to update their R3 language choices on the OASIS portal by May 31, 2026. Schools that have not completed the process must do so within this deadline.At the same time, those who have entered incorrect or non-approved language options have been given a chance to correct their details before the deadline.
Textbooks to be released by July 1
CBSE has also shared a timeline for academic preparation. Textbooks for scheduled Indian languages will be made available on CBSE and NCERT websites by July 1, 2026.For schools offering languages that are not listed in the Constitution, the Board has advised the use of SCERT or other state-approved books. However, the syllabus must follow the learning goals set under NCFSE-2023.
Focus on Indian languages
The Board has once again stressed that schools must teach at least two Indian languages under the R1, R2, R3 system. Schools that have not yet started this have been directed to begin classes from July 1, 2026.
Push for full implementation
There being defined timelines and guidelines, CBSE is concentrating on implementing the policy now. All the schools will need to get everything done on schedule so that there are no delays when teaching begins in the new academic year.Here is the official notice.
