‘I never imagined so many people would come...’: Young, lonely cancer patient ‘orders company’ via food app, riders show up

Not every story that trends online is about controversy or breaking news. Some stories spread because they feel real and close to the heart. Right now, one such story from China is getting attention for its simple yet powerful message. It is about human connection, unexpected support, and how strangers can come together in difficult times. This story did not begin with a big event. It started with a small and unusual request made by a young patient.

A young woman facing treatment largely alone

As reported by the South China Morning Post, Little Li, a 24-year-old from Foshan in Guangdong province, is currently being treated for a rare blood cancer. She has already gone through four rounds of chemotherapy. Doctors say her condition is stable at the moment, but she is still under care.During this period, she has often been on her own. Her father is working away from home to support her treatment expenses. Her younger brother is busy with his internship. Because of this, she has had to spend much of her hospital time without close family around.

A simple request through a delivery app

According to the report, on April 15, Li did something different. Instead of ordering food, she used a food delivery platform to make a personal request. She asked a delivery rider to come and sit with her for two hours. There was no food involved. She only wanted someone to be there with her.The first rider who accepted this request later shared her situation with other riders in his group.

From one visit to a wave of support

After her story was shared, more delivery riders began visiting Li. Many came after completing their work. Some brought small items like milk, snacks, books, and soft toys. Others simply spent time talking to her.As highlighted in the report, one rider, Chen, said, “Li does not have any family with her all the time. I felt sympathy and empathy, so I wanted to visit her.”

Going beyond work to show care

Some riders made extra effort to meet her. A rider from Yunnan sent her flowers through an online florist. Another rider, Huang, travelled nearly three hours from Guangzhou just to visit her.Huang shared his reason, saying, “I once had kind customers who offered me water and greetings. Now, I want to help others in return.”At the hospital, riders were careful not to disturb her rest. Many waited quietly when she was sleeping.

A positive change in her mood

When Li was first admitted, she was quiet and kept to herself. But as more people started visiting, her mood began to improve. She started interacting more and even began eating better. As quoted by the South China Morning Post, she later said, “I never imagined so many people would come to encourage me. They accompanied me selflessly, and I was deeply touched.”

Support from beyond the rider community

As the story gained attention, more people came forward. A police officer visited her and shared stories from his work. She also met a cancer survivor in her 60s, surnamed Wang. The woman brought flowers and shared her own journey to motivate Li. She told her, “Look at how well I am doing. You should stay strong and keep going.”

A story that struck a chord online

Many people online have reacted to this story. Some pointed out how busy delivery workers still found time to support her.One comment read, “The riders are the busiest people in this city, yet they are willing to pause their work for a sick woman.”Another wrote, “These riders are like her temporary family. Love from society can heal all wounds. I hope Li recovers soon.”Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
