Air conditioners provide soothing relief in the scorching heat of peak summers and suffocating humid days, but just as a coin has two sides, these appliances also come with their own risks.Nobody expects their trusty AC to turn into a bomb, but scorching summers push these machines hard, and when they fail, lives hang in the balance. Recent back to back incidents of AC blasts have raised alarms and sent people to the edge of comfort in their homes.In the early hours of Sunday, a massive fire in a four-storey home in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar killed at least nine people and injured four, the suspected reason is an AC explosion.Just days earlier, on April 29, a Ghaziabad high-rise fire raged across seven floors due to an AC blast in one flat. The day before, April 28 in Noida, an AC exploded because its main switch stayed on during work.

But why do AC’s explode?
AC explosions may happen due to one or more of the following reasons
Refrigerant leaks and flammable gases
Modern ACs use refrigerants like R-134a or R-410A, which are normally safe. But cheaper or fake hydrocarbon gases are highly flammable. A leak near a spark, from the compressor or wiring, can ignite a fire or explosion. Always check for certified parts to avoid this risk.
Poor maintenance or blocked filters
Dirty filters, coils, or poor airflow cause the compressor to overheat and build pressure. Without regular cleaning, this stress can rupture parts violently. Simple fixes like monthly filter cleaning and yearly checks from experts or official servicemen keep things safe and running smoothly.
Electrical faults
Short circuits, wrong wiring, or overloads cause fires inside ACs. Motors or capacitors can burst from heat during long hot runs. Use stabilisers, inspect wires yearly, and avoid extension cords to prevent these shocks.Improper installationWrong setup in window or vehicle ACs causes pressure imbalances or seal failures. If safety valves fail, pressure spikes lead to blasts. Hire certified installers who test fully for balanced, leak-free operation.
How to prevent AC explosions?
Here are some some precautions to follow
- Always switch off and completely discharge the unit before repair work.
- Remove nitrogen completely after leak testing.
- Use correct vacuuming procedures to remove air and moisture.
- Maintain refrigerant, clean coils/filters and check for wiring.
- Hire certified professionals, do not DIY
