Indian-origin doctor shares experience of UK driving test, says system is ‘strict but necessary’

An Indian-origin doctor has shared her experience of obtaining a driving licence in the UK, describing the process as significantly more rigorous compared to India.Sunita Sayammagaru wrote in a post on X that while obtaining a driving licence in India felt relatively easy, the UK system required a much higher level of skill and awareness. She said she already held an Indian licence when she moved to the UK in 2007, but soon realised her driving standards were not up to the mark.“I realised how pathetic my driving was,” she wrote, adding that she had not been taught a large part of what is expected from drivers in the UK.According to her post, the UK licensing process involves both a theory test and a practical exam, where candidates are closely assessed on multiple aspects of driving. She described how examiners check mirror usage, lane discipline, indicators, parking skills, speed control and the ability to navigate complex roundabouts.During her first attempt, she failed the practical test. She said the examiner pointed out a major fault — failing to complete a full mirror and shoulder check before moving out at a roundabout — despite otherwise acceptable driving.“He said the rest of my driving was OK and that he was strict with me, but it was for my good,” she wrote. She reapplied for a test two weeks later and was assessed again by the same examiner, which she said made her nervous. However, on her second attempt, she passed.Sayammagaru also noted that several Indian drivers she knew had failed the UK test multiple times despite years of driving experience back home.“It’s that strict,” she said.Despite the difficulty, she argued that such standards are necessary.“Driving licence tests should be strict. This ensures safety of self and others,” she wrote. Her post has since resonated with many users online, with several agreeing that stricter testing can lead to safer roads.
