Anil Kapoor on how Majnu Bhai from ‘Welcome’ was inspired by role from 1990s ‘Awaargi’: 'This character never left me'

One of the most iconic and entertaining characters played by Anil Kapoor is undoubtedly Majnu Bhai from ‘Welcome’, a role that continues to be loved and quoted by fans even today. The quirky gangster, known for his eccentric behaviour and comic timing, has achieved cult status over the years. Recently, the actor revealed that this memorable character actually drew inspiration from one of his earlier roles.The revelation came after a fan praised his performance in ‘Awaargi’, directed by Mahesh Bhatt. Responding to the post, Anil Kapoor wrote, “Awaargi may not have been the most noticeable film I’ve done, but this character never left me. He returned years later as the inspiration behind Majnu Bhai, only with a lighter twist…The shoulder tilt, the mannerisms, the madness, first in Mahesh Bhatt’s world, later in Anees.”

Anil Kapoor’s journey from Azaad to Majnu Bhai

In ‘Awaargi’, Anil Kapoor played Azaad, a layered and intense character that showcased his dramatic range. Years later, he reimagined those traits into the eccentric and humorous Majnu Bhai in ‘Welcome’, directed by Anees Bazmee. The transformation turned into cinematic gold, with Majnu Bhai becoming a pop-culture icon known for his antics, paintings, and memorable dialogues.

The star-studded world of ‘Welcome’

The 2007 comedy featured a powerhouse ensemble including Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Nana Patekar, Paresh Rawal and Feroz Khan, along with Mallika Sherawat. Blending comedy with crime elements, the film became a massive box office success and continues to enjoy cult status among audiences.

Welcome 4’ in the works

Fans of the franchise have more to look forward to, as reports suggest that ‘Welcome 4’ is currently in development. The script is said to be in an advanced stage, with plans to bring back key characters played by Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal. According to News 18, a report revealed that the scripting of ‘Welcome 4’ is being carried out in a manner where these three characters are organically woven into the narrative, and a completely different storyline is being developed.

Anil Kapoor’s work front

Anil Kapoor was recently seen in the hinterland action drama ‘Subedaar’, directed by Suresh Triveni. Co-starring Radhikka Madan, the film premiered on Prime Video on March 5, 2026, and features Kapoor as a retired army officer who takes on corruption with grit and determination.
