Most fuel-efficient petrol mid-size SUVs: New Duster, Hyryder & more

Fuel efficiency has become a key factor for SUV buyers in India amid rising fuel prices and a shift towards petrol-powered vehicles. In the mid-size SUV segment, led by models such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Skoda Kushaq and Hyundai Creta, manufacturers are focusing on improving mileage without affecting performance or practicality. Hybrid technology has enabled some petrol SUVs to deliver close to 28km/l, while conventional petrol engines with mild-hybrid systems and turbocharging continue to balance efficiency and drivability. For buyers dealing with daily traffic, long commutes and fluctuating fuel costs, selecting a fuel-efficient petrol mid-size SUV has become an important ownership consideration. In this article, let’s take a look at the most fuel-efficient petrol mid-size SUVs you can buy.Three mid-size SUVs come first! Maruti Suzuki Grand VitaraToyota Urban Cruiser HyryderMaruti Suzuki VictorisThe highest fuel efficiency figures in the mid-size SUV segment are delivered by models from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota, including the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Victoris, all powered by a 116hp, 1.5-litre strong-hybrid petrol engine paired with an e-CVT gearbox. The Victoris has a claimed fuel efficiency of 28.65 kmpl, while the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara have a claimed figure of 27.97 kmpl each.

Hybrid models comes first!

These remain the only mid-size SUVs in India to offer a strong-hybrid petrol setup, enabling higher fuel efficiency than conventional petrol models. The Victoris records the highest mileage in this group, followed by the Grand Vitara and Hyryder. The hybrid system allows electric-only operation at low speeds and in traffic, supporting lower fuel consumption and making these models suitable for buyers seeking reduced running costs without shifting to a fully electric vehicle.Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Maruti Suzuki Victoris The same three SUVs are also offered with naturally aspirated petrol engines, providing a conventional alternative to the strong-hybrid setup. With a standard petrol drivetrain, they are positioned for buyers seeking lower upfront costs and simpler ownership while retaining everyday usability.All three models are powered by a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, NA petrol engine with 103 hp and come paired with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. It’s also offered with an AWD option. The Victoris records slightly higher fuel efficiency than the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder in standard manual and automatic configurations. In all-wheel-drive form, the Hyryder returns the highest mileage, followed by the Grand Vitara, while the Victoris ranks third.The Maruti Victoris delivers a claimed mileage of 21.18kpl (MT FWD), 21.06kpl (AT FWD), and 19.07kpl (AT AWD), while the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara returns 21.11kpl, 20.58kpl, and 19.20kpl, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder posts 21.12kpl, 20.58kpl, and 19.39kpl respectively.

2026 Skoda Kushaq

Skoda Kushaq Next is the recently launched Skoda Kushaq. The 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol with 116 hp, 172 nm torque has claimed fuel efficiency of 19.66 kmpl for MT and 19.09 kmpl for AT. This engine was previously used to get a 6-speed torque converter automatic, but now Skoda has introduced a new 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission, which is also available as an option even in the base variant. There’s also a much more powerful 150 hp, 1.5-litre turbo petrol which comes paired only with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. It has a claimed fuel efficiency figure of 18.72 kmpl.

Basalt and Aircross

Citroen Basalt and Aircross Next on the list are the Citroën Basalt and Citroën C3 Aircross. Both models are available with naturally aspirated and turbo-petrol engine options, with the turbocharged versions delivering higher fuel efficiency than the naturally aspirated ones. The 110 hp, 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol gets two gearbox options – a 6-speed MT or a torque converter automatic. The Citroën Basalt returns a claimed mileage of 19.5kpl (MT) and 18.7kpl (AT), while the Citroën C3 Aircross delivers 18.5kpl (MT) and 17.6kpl (AT).

2026 Duster

Renault DusterNext SUV on the list is the new Renault Duster. It’s currently offered with two engine options – a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol and a 1.3-litre, 163 hp, turbo petrol engine. Mileage figures have been disclosed only for the larger engine option, with the automatic variant offering around 0.7kpl higher efficiency than the manual. The Renault Duster delivers a claimed mileage of 17.75kpl with the manual transmission and 18.45kpl with the automatic.Hyundai CretaNext is the Hyundai Creta. The 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo petrol with 160hp and 250Nm has claimed fuel efficiency of 18 kmpl for the MT transmission (only offered with the N-line variant). The DCT trim has claimed efficiency of 18.4 kmpl. The 1.5-litre NA petrol with 115hp and 144Nm has 17.4 kmpl for manual and 17.7 kmpl for CVT automatic.
