Gram panchayat ex-prez among 2 held with heroin & psychotropic drugs

Silchar: Cachar police arrested two persons, including a former gram panchayat president, and seized a large quantity of suspected drugs from the Sonai area of Cachar district.Acting on intelligence inputs, a team from Sonai police station conducted a raid at in New Ramnagar on Saturday. During the raid, 33-year-old Sabina Yasmin Barbhuiya, former president of New Ramnagar gram panchayat, was apprehended.A search of her residence led to the recovery of 615.99g of suspected heroin, allegedly concealed inside 40 soap boxes. Police also seized 290 nitrazepam tablets, a psychotropic substance prohibited without valid authorisation.A car was also impounded on suspicion of being used for transporting the contraband.During the investigation, police claimed to have established links between the seized drugs and another suspected trafficker, identified as Raju Hussain of Gumra. He was arrested later the same day by a special police team.Sources said Barbhuiya’s family members had allegedly faced narcotics-related accusations in the past as well. Her husband, Abdul Wajid Barbhuiya, was reportedly arrested last year in connection with possession and transportation of narcotic substances.Police officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain whether the seizure is part of a larger drug trafficking network operating in the region.A case has been registered under relevant sections of the NDPS Act, and both accused were produced before a local court which sent them to judicial custody.
