Maturity as a concept is often tied to age. Even as adults, many of us fail to understand what it truly means, let alone express it. However, this 16-year-old boy’s words will make you wonder whether maturity comes with age or circumstances.A short video clip of 16-year-old Chand is winning hearts on social media. The little boy’s way of describing “zimmedaari” (responsibility) has left people wondering and raised a deeper question: What does it take to become mature? In a clip shared on Instagram by Asad Ahmad (@asadwithpeople), Chand, the young boy, shares how he, along with 3 other people, unload nearly 8,000 bricks each day. Asad and his friend add, “Toh 1500 rupay kama lete ho is age mein aap” (so you earn 1500 rupees at this age), he responds with a simple nod and a bright smile.Chand lost his parents. Now an orphan, the boy lives with his brother and his wife. Chand also shared that he studies while working at the sites. He is in the 10th grade. It is in this context that his words resonate even more deeply. His circumstances have taught him a lot.In the clip Chand says, “Jiske upar koi nai hota usko jaldi samajh aati hai,” the boy believes those who have no one else to rely on often learn life’s lessons much earlier than others. He adds that children who grow up with the support of their parents often get the space to remain carefree for longer. And then comes the line that has stayed with so many: “Humein apne upar zimmedaari lekar chalni padti hai.” This would have been a much simpler sentence coming from a grown up, but when 16-year-old Chand, someone who carries the weight of not only bricks, but a lived experience, it becomes something much more complex.Chand doesn’t pity his struggles, instead, the boy quietly accepts reality. In Chand’s story, maturity doesn’t appear as something polished or learned over time, but as something shaped by necessity. His words don’t just win hearts, they hold up a mirror, reminding many that maturity isn’t always about growing older, but about growing through what life places on your shoulders.
