It says that Indian passport holders are no longer required to obtain an airport transit visa when passing through the international transit zones of French airports. The update has been formally confirmed by the French Embassy in India. Before this, Indian travellers, even those not leaving the airport, needed to apply for an ATV for layovers in France. Most of the time, this particular policy added extra paperwork, pressure, costs. There was also an uncertainty about travel plans. However, the latest policy changes everything and makes travelling easier for Indian travellers as they won’t need an ATV, provided they remain within the international zone of the airport and do not pass through immigration control. There was a bilateral agreement between India and France in February 2026 regarding this. The discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron reached this conclusion. As per an official statement from the MEA, Indian nationals “transiting through mainland France exclusively by air will no longer need a transit visa”.What it means for travellersNo need to apply separately for an ATVTravellers can now save on visa fees and service chargesThe transit get easier and faster More airline and itinerary options for long-haul travelExemptionIt is important for travellers to know that this exemption applies only to airside transit. Those who wish to leave the airport and roam around in French cities will still need a valid Schengen visa. Before this update, only select Indian travellers like those with valid visas or residence permits from countries like the United States, Canada, or Schengen states, were allowed. But now, the new rule removes these conditional exemptions and extends visa-free transit access to all Indian nationals holding ordinary passports.Earlier this year, Germany too made it easy for Indian travellers by removing the ATV requirement. This trend reflects growing recognition of India as a major outbound travel market and an important global mobility partner. For Indian travellers, this update changes how international journeys can be planned.
