Mayte Garcia recalls finding out about ex-husband Prince’s passing: ‘It was really hard, and I didn’t want it to be true’

Mayte Garcia, who was once married to iconic musician Prince, recently revisited their past and opened up about their relationship. Garcia also spoke about how she found out about the singer’s passing, nearly a decade after his untimely demise.

While speaking to Us Weekly, Garcia reflected on her relationship with Prince. The two were together for four years before officially divorcing in 2000. They got married on Valentine’s Day in 1996. During the interview, she also recalled how she learned about his death, sharing that she was driving when she received the news. She said, “I got called, and I don’t know how I drove home. I don’t know how many nos I said. It’s something that we are all going to have to deal with—losing somebody we love—but it was really hard, and I didn’t want it to be true.”The Raspberry Beret singer and Garcia first met when she was a 16-year-old belly dancer. After her mother gave a tape of her dancing to Prince, she joined him on tour around the age of 18. While working as his backup dancer, she eventually moved into his Minnesota estate, Paisley Park.

Mayte Garcia on how she and Prince fell in love

In an earlier interview with The Wall Street Journal, Garcia had opened up about how their love story unfolded. “First we became friends, then we became pen pals. And then I sort of became his muse without knowing. Then we fell in love, and then we got married. It was a beautiful romance. I like to say a fairytale because it was so romantic and magical,” she said.What happened to PrincePrince, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of pop music and culture, passed away on April 21, 2016. He died of an accidental overdose and was found unresponsive at his home.
