‘Ignored repeated warnings’: Iran fires on container ship in Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard opened fire on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, damaging the vessel in a fresh escalation as ceasefire talks failed to take off.The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the attack occurred around 7:55 am (local time), when a Guard gunboat approached the ship and opened fire without issuing a warning. The vessel’s bridge sustained heavy damage, though no injuries or environmental impact were reported. The incident took place about 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman, with all crew members confirmed safe. UKMTO has advised vessels in the region to remain alert and report any suspicious activity.

Iran claims ship ignored warnings

Iran, however, defended the action, saying it was enforcing maritime rules. As per Tasnim News Agency, Iranian forces opened fire after the container ship “ignored repeated warnings,” leading to significant damage. In a social media post, the agency wrote, “Iran enforces Maritime Law on container ship defying warnings.”“Iranian armed forces opened fire on a container ship after it ignored repeated warnings, causing significant damage to the vessel, according to a report by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO)”, it added. The conflicting narratives highlight rising tensions in one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, which carries a significant share of global oil supplies.

Escalation linked to wider maritime tensions

The latest incident follows a series of confrontations at sea. US forces recently seized an Iranian container ship and boarded an oil tanker linked to Tehran’s oil trade, further straining relations.Tensions have intensified since April 20, when Iranian forces reportedly launched drones toward US warships after an alleged attack on an Iranian vessel.Tehran has accused Washington of “violating the ceasefire and committing maritime piracy,” while the US has maintained its naval blockade. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively disrupted and both sides trading accusations, maritime security concerns continue to mount, raising fears of further escalation in the region.
