Salman Khan rejects direct-to-OTT for 'Maatrubhumi'; theatrical release slated for May 2026 - Reports

The upcoming film ‘Maatrubhumi’ directed by Apoorva Lakhia is inspired by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. Recent rumours suggested that ‘Maatrubhumi’ might skip cinemas and premiere directly on a streaming platform. Now, reports say that Salman Khan is determined to release his upcoming patriotic war film, ‘Maatrubhumi,’ in theatres. The actor has reportedly ruled out any direct-to-OTT plans despite earlier rumours. It is now expected to hit screens around May 2026 after facing delays and reshoots.

Theatrical release decision for Salman Khan’s film

Reports from Bollywood Hungama confirmed that Salman Khan and director Apoorva Lakhia are committed to a theatrical release.According to the portal, “Salman continues to be a mega star and he has mounted Maatrubhumi on a grand scale. It’s a film for the big screen and hence, he and director Apoorva Lakhia are committed to releasing the film theatrically once the issues surrounding the film are resolved.”

Censorship and OTT reality for ‘Maatrubhumi’

Many assumed that skipping theatres would help avoid censorship issues. However, the report clarifies that this is not the case. Every film released directly on OTT platforms must still go through the certification process. The portal explained, “There’s a general misconception among certain people that there’s no censorship on OTT. Hence, they feel that if Salman Khan opts to skip a theatrical release, he’ll be able to drop the film on OTT without any problem. However, that’s not how it works. Every film that releases directly on streaming platforms also goes through the certification process, just like any theatrical film. So, even for a direct-to-OTT premiere, the government must clear the film before it can be presented to the public.”

Story and background of the Salman Khan starrer

‘Maatrubhumi’ is based on the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese forces. Originally titled ‘Battle of Galwan’, the film has undergone several adjustments. It is now targeting a May 15, 2026 theatrical release.
