China is one more step closer to clean energy after developing a 100,000-tonne green methanol project within its northeastern region. The project has been developed in Liaoning province and is just the first step of an even bigger green fuel plan that has been devised to reduce carbon footprints and encourage sustainable energy consumption. The combination of renewables and biomass for generating green fuels demonstrates that there is a worldwide trend of switching to low-emission fuels as well as encouraging companies to find eco-friendly solutions in their operations, for example, in aviation and shipping.
Green methanol project in Northeast China: Key details
Based on information from the Jilin Provincial Commercial Information Center, this project is located in Kangping County of Shenyang City, China. As an essential component of a more comprehensive demonstration programme for green fuels, the overall annual capacity of this project is estimated at 500,000 tonnes. The initial phase of this project is targeted at developing 100,000 tonnes of green methanol per annum, which will be achieved in two years.This project is exceptional due to its integrated approach towards manufacturing products. This approach entails a blend of hydrogen generation via renewable energy sources, along with biomass gasification, which forms a carbon-efficient manufacturing cycle. In this regard, according to the project description, “an accompanying wind power plant will provide reliable and green electricity during the whole manufacturing process.”Moreover, the facility will make extensive use of local resources. For instance, Kangping County is characterised by high potential for wind power, alongside significant agricultural wastes, with roughly five million tonnes of straw produced annually.
How green methanol supports clean energy transition
Green methanol is becoming known as an important aspect of the sustainable fuel transition. While the standard method of producing methanol involves using fossil fuels, green methanol uses sustainable resources, including biomass and green hydrogen.The plant under construction in northeastern China is one example of large-scale production.
