Can't walk: Indian-origin man Kishan Patel, shot by off-duty cop in road rage incident, returns New Jersey home after two years

Two years after being injured in a road rage shooting incident, which left an Indian-origin man paralyzed, Kishan Patel returned to his New Jersey home from a specialized facility in Texas earlier this month. His family spent more than $1 million to transform the New Jersey home into a place where Patel gets all the medical facilities, as he can’t walk and can’t take care of himself. He suffered cardiac arrest during the shooting, which resulted in a brain injury and a broken vertebra. “We just want to make Kishan comfortable. You know, take that hospital environment away from him,” 32-year-old Kishan’s mother Manjina Patel said as the family addressed the media when Kishan returned home on April 9. Kishan now does not need a ventilator to breathe.

Off-duty NYPD cop shot at Patel, was sentenced to 10 years in prison

The shooting took place at the intersection of Route 73 and Cooper Road in Voorhees Township, New Jersey, back on May 17, 2024. Police responded to a reported crash at the location and found Patel bleeding from a gunshot wound. Surveillance footage tracked the shooter as Hieu Tran, an officer with the New York City Police Department, who used his department-issued firearm and shot at Patel during an apparent road rage incident. Tran was not on duty at that time and he was leaving a wedding when the alleged road rage took place. Tran shot Patel multiple times and then drove home in New York, reloaded his gun and reported to work the next day. Tran was found guilty in the shooting and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on December 15, 2025. Tran’s attorney said he had mental health issues and alcohol struggles. The Patel family is suing New York City, urging mayor Zohran Mamdani to review the case and look at NYPD practices. Manjina revealed to CBS News that nobody from the NYPD ever checked on the family on how they were doing. “This should be the case that kind of wakes up the mayor, wakes up the police commissioner, and the entire NYPD to do something about their hiring practices and how they maintain and retain officers going forward,” said Joseph Marrone, the family’s attorney.
