KARAIKAL: A 60-year-old woman was killed on Monday morning after the facade of a building housing a liquor shop collapsed on her while she was walking on a busy road in Karaikal. The accident occurred on the Bharathiar Road, near the municipal marriage hall. The building had been housing a liquor shop, which was in the process of being shifted to a new location. Workers had been removing fixtures and materials from the premises for the past two days.Around late Monday morning, the front wall of the building’s first floor suddenly gave way, crashing down onto the sidewalk. Junaidha Begum, a resident of Mustafa Kamal Street, who happened to be passing by the building at that exact moment, was trapped under the heavy debris and died instantly.Upon receiving the information, the Karaikal town police and personnel from the fire and rescue services department rushed to the scene. Police temporarily cordoned off the area and diverted vehicles. An excavator was deployed to clear the massive pile of bricks and mortar from the road. The clearance operation lasted more than two hours, after which normal traffic flow was restored.The Karaikal town police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the collapse.
