Tension inside LIV Golf is growing as Patrick Reed openly takes a different position from Jon Rahm on the issue of DP World Tour fines. The debate has become louder during the DP World Tour’s International Swing, where LIV golfers are facing penalties for playing in events that clash with the rival league’s schedule. Patrick Reed has made it clear that he plans to deal with DP World Tour fines by performance, not protest. Speaking ahead of the Dubai event, Reed said strong results and prize money would help cover any fines he receives. His comments immediately put him at odds with Jon Rahm, who has refused to pay the fines and continues to challenge the system.Patrick Reed’s approach has drawn attention because LIV Golf players are no longer protected from these fines. Until 2025, LIV Golf handled many penalties, but that support has now ended. As a result, golfers like Patrick Reed must pay DP World Tour fines themselves if they want to keep competing on the tour.

Patrick Reed chooses performance while Jon Rahm refuses to pay DP World Tour fines

Patrick Reed backed up his words with action. During the second round in Dubai, he moved to the top of the leaderboard at nine under par after rounds of 69 and 66. Reed’s message is simple. If he plays well, the prize money will allow him to return for future events without worry. Jon Rahm has taken a very different path. Back in 2024, Jon Rahm appealed the DP World Tour fines rather than paying them. That appeal has allowed him to keep his DP World Tour card and remain eligible for the Ryder Cup. However, the fines linked to his LIV Golf schedule have now grown to around three million dollars.Jon Rahm has said he believes the fines are unfair. He explained that some of the conflicting events were tournaments he would not have played even if he had stayed away from LIV Golf. Despite warnings that he could risk future Ryder Cup eligibility, Rahm has maintained his refusal to pay. Other players have also questioned the system. Thomas Detry, a new LIV Golf signing, said the DP World Tour fine structure is inconsistent. He noted that some players compete without penalties, while others are fined for similar schedules. As the DP World Tour moves deeper into its season, the contrast between Patrick Reed and Jon Rahm highlights a growing divide within LIV Golf. With appeals still pending and fines unresolved, how players respond may shape their careers and their place in major team events going forward.
