Seven things to check in your car before a long summer drive: Easy tips

Planning a road trip this summer? Good idea. But before you hit the highway, spend a few minutes checking your car. Indian summers can be harsh, and a small issue can quickly turn into a big headache on the road. Instead of learning this the hard way once, stuck on the side of a highway with an overheating engine, here’s a quick pre-drive check you can follow and be stress free.Start with the coolant level. This is the most important one. Your engine works harder in the heat, and low coolant can lead to overheating within minutes. Just make sure the level is between the min and max marks. If it looks low, top it up.Next, check the engine oil. If your car is due for a service, don’t delay it. Old or low engine oil can affect performance and increase heat. A quick dipstick check is all it takes.

Tyres are often ignored, but they matter a lot. Look at the tyre pressure and condition. Heat expands air, so slightly overinflated tyres can be risky. Stick to the recommended pressure. Also check for cuts or uneven wear, especially if you’re planning a long highway run. -Now move to the battery. Summer heat can be tough on batteries. If your car struggles to start or the battery is a few years old, get it checked. It’s better than being stranded somewhere remote. -Your car AC is not just about comfort, it’s essential in this weather. If it’s not cooling properly, get it checked before the trip. Driving for hours in a hot cabin can be exhausting. -Don’t forget the brakes. Listen for any unusual sounds and make sure the pedal feels normal. If something feels off, don’t ignore it. Brakes are not something you take chances with.Lastly, keep a few basic essentials in the car. A bottle of water, phone charger, some snacks, and a basic toolkit. Also, keep your documents handy. It sounds simple, but it helps more than you think. These checks hardly take 10–15 minutes, but they can save you hours of trouble. A little prep goes a long way, especially in Indian summers. Drive safe and enjoy the journey.
