Chennai corpn to revamp three lakes with 35cr blue-green infra

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has decided to rejuvenate three urban lakes — Nolambur, Ramanthangal and Subramaniya — with a focus on climate resilience and ‘blue-green infrastructure’.The proposal includes strengthening of bunds, desilting lakebeds and creating wetlands and bio-filtration zones to naturally treat inflows and improve water quality. “The project will also introduce pedestrian-friendly features such as walkways, gazebos, seating areas and viewing decks. The restoration is expected to enhance groundwater recharge, reduce flood risks in nearby residential neighbourhoods and help moderate urban heat,” said a senior GCC official. Civic officials said the current plan adopts a ‘blue-green infrastructure’ approach, combining water management with ecological and social benefits. Work on the project is expected to begin soon, with authorities expecting the upgraded lakes to serve as models for similar restoration efforts across the city.Residents living near Nolambur welcomed the move but stressed the need for sustained maintenance. “We have seen beautification drives before, but without proper upkeep they don’t last. If GCC ensures regular desilting and prevents sewage discharge, this can truly transform the area,” said R Kumar, a resident of Nolambur. The initiative comes as Chennai continues to grapple with recurring flooding during monsoons and reducing groundwater levels during summers. “Chennai’s network of interconnected lakes and wetlands acted as natural buffers, absorbing excess rainwater and recharging aquifers. However, rapid urbanisation, encroachments and pollution have severely reduced their capacity over the decades,” said Saravanan, a hydrogeologist.
